If you receive the notification Data frozen until [year], it means Finbooks has proactively frozen your data up to and including that fiscal year. Everything up to that year is now consolidated and protected; everything after it continues to work exactly as before.
What does freezing your data mean?
Freezing consolidates one or more past fiscal years into a locked, verified state. Once a year is frozen:
the balances, transactions and calculations of that year are locked in the state they were in at the moment of the freeze
they can no longer be modified by accident, by a new import, or by a change made to a connection
the tax reports you generated for those years remain stable and will always match the numbers you declared
Think of it as closing the accounting books for a year: the numbers are final, filed, and protected. This is a standard good practice in accounting, and it becomes especially valuable once you have submitted a tax return based on those numbers, because it guarantees that what Finbooks shows will always correspond to what you declared.
Why did Finbooks apply it automatically?
Finbooks applies this automatic freeze when two conditions are met:
it has been 30 days since you added any new connections
your data for those past fiscal years is complete and in order, with no unresolved errors
In other words, the freeze is applied precisely because there was nothing left to fix. Rather than leaving finished years exposed to accidental changes indefinitely, Finbooks consolidates them for you.
If your past years contained unresolved issues, this freeze would not have been applied.
Is any action required?
No. This is an informational notification: everything was already in order, which is exactly why the freeze was applied. There is nothing to review, nothing to fix, and nothing to confirm.
In particular:
your current fiscal year is not affected in any way: new transactions keep being imported and calculated normally
your connections keep working exactly as before
all your reports, both for frozen and current years, remain available for download at any time
your historical data remains fully visible: frozen does not mean hidden, it means protected
Where you will see this notification
This message appears in the Notification Center, which you can open by clicking Notifications in the main menu, at the bottom of the sidebar. You will find it in the What's new section, highlighted while unread and counted in the yellow badge. Once read, it remains in your history, and you can archive it at any time.
Because no action is required, this message never appears in the Action required section and does not stay pending: reading it is all there is to do.
You can learn more about how alerts and notifications work in our article about the Notification Center.
When would you want to remove the freeze?
Most users never need to. The typical situations where removing it makes sense are:
you discover a wallet, exchange or account you had forgotten to connect, with transactions belonging to a frozen year
you need to correct a transaction in a frozen year, for example after noticing an error in a past import
you are preparing a corrective tax filing for a past year and need to adjust the underlying data first
If none of these applies to you, the safest choice is simply to leave the freeze in place.
How to manage or remove the freeze
You stay in control at all times. Click the Manage button on the notification to review the freeze settings, where you can keep it, adjust the year it covers, or remove it entirely.
Keep in mind what happens if you remove it: the previously frozen years become editable again, and any new data you import or any change you make can affect their balances and calculations.
If you have already filed tax returns based on those years, review any changes carefully before regenerating reports, so that your Finbooks data and your filed declarations stay aligned. Once your adjustments are done, you can freeze the years again at any time.
